In numbers, there’s power. In unity, there’s strength.
Group therapy is a type of psychotherapy that involves joining others with similar experiences, and they can add extra support to your individual therapy.
You will realize that you are not alone in your struggles. Talking and listening in the group helps put things into perspective.
Groups are a great sounding board and support network. That network will challenge you, hold you accountable, and care for you.
There are two different types of groups…
Open Groups
In open groups, others join at any time; so, there is no waiting list. Participants can come and go as freely as they want.
Since the dynamics are always changing in an open group, participants are challenged to work through them as they would in any family dynamic.
Closed Groups
A closed group begins at a specified time for a specified group of people, and it’s time-limited. The advantage of a closed group is that everyone starts and ends simultaneously, so there is less unpredictability.
People often feel more comfortable in a closed group because it’s the same participants every time they meet.
A few other notes about groups…
No matter the type of group, there are always support and resources available to you.
Starting out in a group might feel a bit awkward at first, but groups become very cohesive in a short period of time.
Groups are typically ten members, and they vary, so check times and topics. In the past, I’ve offered these groups:
- “Eating Disorder Support For Young Adults”
- “Education for Parents on Eating Disorders”
- Anxiety groups
Here’s your next step…
“You are not alone” has never been truer than in a group of people feeling a lot of the same issues as you are right now.
Come laugh, cry, and learn with others!
